We re also going to talk about straight crossover cables and rollover cables and when to use a crossover cable wendy s rollover cable and when to use a straight through cable. An organization called telecommunications industry association also known as tiaa and electronics industry. Alliance. Also known as e is are the ones that defined standards for unshielded twisted pair cabling and color code.
They also are the ones that define standards for pin out. And so today. We re going to talk about their standards. The 568a and the 568b now no matter what patch cord and where you buy it from if it s properly pinned out.
And what i mean is the right wire going to the right pin. Then you re going to either have the 568a or the 568b standard. Now just to let you know looking at this. This is a this is kind of an easy way to determine what you have if you take your mod plug in this is called a mod plug right here.
And you can see the different pins. There right along there and the wires going to them you have four pairs of wire in telecommunications. We never talk about individual wires. We always talk about pairs.
So you have four pairs of wires. In an rj45 and this is called a mod plug short for modular plug. And it has a little device here that keeps it in the wall..
When you plug it in or in the patch panel. When you plug it in so. We call this an rj45 mod plug and right now. It is pinned out with the four pairs in here different colored pairs.
They all have a background of white because the first group of wires are always in white. So one of the ways you can tell whether you have a 568b or a 568a cable is you look at the cable to the left. And if it s orange. Then you have a 568b if this cable here is green.
Then you have a 568a cable. Now a lot of people say well why have two standards well the reason you have two standards is if one cable is an a cable and one cable is a b. Which is not in this case. You ll have a crossover cable and i ll explain a little later on when to have a crossover cable and how to use it and when d is it in this case since the orange is on the left side.
These are both cabled 568b are pinned out rather. 568 d. If one side was a 568a. It would have the green to the left.
And this would have the orange to the left. And that would be a crossover cable and you can see the orange. I think i already pointed that out to the left now if you want to know what the rest of the colors are for a normal 568. A or d.

Communicate using pins. 1 and 2 to send information and they receive information on pins. 3 6. A hub or a switch in the back kamiya sends information on pins 3 6.
And they receive information on pins 1 2. So you want to make sure it s straight through to a switch because then a switch can communicate with your pc. Why would we need a crossover cable..
While a crossover cable is used when you re connecting like devices together pc to pc. You would need a crossover cable and the reason. Why well pcs send on pins 1 2. Receive on 3 6.
So if you had a cable that went directly from one pc to another both would be sending on pins 1 2. Would be listening to receive on pins 3 6. So if one end of your patch cord is an a and the other end is a b. It s a crossover cable and what happens then is our the one pc.
That s transmitting on pins 1 2. On one end is going to be the same pair of cable. That s connected to the montt plugs in position 3 6. So they both can communicate to each other thus the word crossover another way that you can have a crossover patch cord without actually having an a and a b is to purchase a module like this it s a crossover module and what happens is it goes in and one standard.
Doesn t matter. Which standard a or b. And it comes out at the opposite standard has to be the opposite to be a crossover patch court. A lot of technicians use this it s nice and handy to have they don t have to carry a lot of things around and so when they need a crossover cable or they want to test something to make sure that a crossover is needed there they have this in their.
Toolbox then you can buy this at cable supplycom. And as you can see it says right on it crossover adapter. And what this is is it does the crossover within the system itself. So you take a regular cable and you get in the back.
And now you ll have a crossover cable from here to here the other like devices. Where you need crossover cables is when you connect two switches or hubs together that s when you re gonna need a crossover cable just between two switches. So like equipment needs crossover cables..
Unlike equipment such as pc to switch or switch. Two routers. Need straight through pin outs. Now some of you who are cisco technicians will wonder well.
I didn t use a crossover cable from my switch a to switch b. And it worked fine and the reason. Why is some cisco equipment has a logic that s built into it that when it recognizes a straight through and it needs a crossover it adjusts for that particular item or that particular style. The other thing that you sometimes will hear is a rollover cable.
And it s a rollover cable is not a cross over cable. And what happens in a rollover cable is you take the same pin out as you have here and you just roll it completely over this way and then stick it into a mod plug and in effect. It would look like this with this little tab on this side. And the only use that i m aware of is for what s called a console cable used to program.
The cisco equipment on 10 base t and a hundred base tx there s two pairs that are used so it s your pins 1 2. 3. 6. However on gigabit ethernet.
