one of the most popular means to gain consumer trial is through This is a topic that many people are looking for. faithandmedia.org is a channel providing useful information about learning, life, digital marketing and online courses …. it will help you have an overview and solid multi-faceted knowledge . Today, faithandmedia.org would like to introduce to you American Imperialism: Crash Course US History #28 – YouTube. Following along are instructions in the video below:
” s one of the most controversial habits of our fiery. Incoming president tweeting sometimes in in the middle of the night. Donald trump says it s his way of communicating with the masses. However most americans say they want him to cut it out wait until you hear what happened to one high school junior.
Who tweeted at trump. And what he has to say about it now here s my nightline co anchor juju chang. It s dawn in a suburb outside detroit. Usually just waking up for like a regular day of school and like a typical teenager part of antonio dell otero s morning routine checking his social media.
But when it comes to twitter. This 16 year old junior class president is not at all typical. He seems to have made a very powerful enemy. The next president of the united states.
Donald trump. Dubbed the tweeter in chief trump s use of twitter. Prolific and provocative. All day today trump unleashing.
A firestorm of tweets stoking global feuds and controversy here at home less than 20 minutes later the president elect firing off these tweets one of the main tools. He s wielded in his rise to power his megaphone aimed not just at the powerful but at individual citizens. Like antonio. Who dared express a teenager s dissent.
In one tweet. I called him a reject cheedo. It was pretty crazy because it was the first time a tweet of mine has ever you know received that kind of attention the tweet got thousands of likes and retweets and a lot of hate and then he was blocked by the real. Donald trump.
How do you interpret this man. The next president united states blocking a 16 year old high school student. I thought okay you know my my tweet was definitely amateur. It was weird to have him block someone blocking means antonio could no longer directly see any of donald trump s tweets.
And he s far from an isolated case. Now you re blocked by the person in line to become the leader of the free world now in this group that doesn t isn t as important as this other group. We spoke to more than a dozen but since twitter won t comment on users blocking habits. It s hard to know exactly how many have been blocked.
But there were enough that a hashtag was born blocked by trauma. Known as the commander in tweet. Trump. Himself credits his tweets to helping him.
Win. The white house between facebook and twitter. I have i guess more than 40 million people that s a modern day form of communication. I get it out much faster than a press release.
But now as he s about to take on the mantle of commander in chief. His use of twitter as his chosen platform to launch political attacks and policy is drawing widespread concern in fact. A recent survey found that 64 of americans want trump to shut down his personal. Twitter account once he takes office on the campaign trail trump himself promised to change his twitter.
Ways don t worry i ll give it up after a president we won t wait any wide open not presidential. But just this weekend. He reversed course telling the times of london. He s keeping his personal account claiming.
I am covered so dishonestly by the press..
So dishonestly. It was tweets from that personal account plus campaign rhetoric like this they re bringing drugs. They re bringing crime. They re rapists.
We have to have a temporary ban on muslims coming into this country. I m sorry. That s bird. The then 15 year old american who s half middle eastern half cuban to vent his frustrations on twitter as a hispanic american you took that personally mm hmm.
I did yeah for sure. It s you know two groups of people he has viciously attacked over his election and it obviously angered me of course 16 year old antonio has very little in common with conservative radio talk show host. Joe walsh. Except one thing for him to block me.
Because of one or two negative. Things. Surprise. Things.
The former republican congressman and vocal trump. Supporter says. He s been blocked by trump since fall of 2015. After criticizing his comments about megyn.
Kelly and senator. John mccain. What s so ironic is that s what trump. Says he does he says.
What he believes good or bad you would think that he would respect somebody who says what they think do you think all american citizens should be able to see donald trump s tweets. Heck yes heck yeah see he s our president i will say this again as a trump supporter. Mr. Trump if you re listening he is way too thin skinned trump s aggressive and unapologetic tweets have launched his campaign he tweeted early and often about the birther movement.
The conspiracy theory. That obama wasn t born in the us. It took years for him to back down once on the campaign trail. His tweeting went into overdrive.
So i ve been covering donald trump for the past 11 months. And i ve never actually seen him send a tweet mostly because he usually tweets during the wee hours of the night are very early in the morning while many of his tweets may seem like. Impulsive 3 am bombshells. They often masterfully control.
The news cycle. Donald trump is a master at manipulating. The news cycle and he uses twitter to help him one example. He was tweeting that meryl streep was overrated at the same time his cabinet nominees for undergoing those heated confirmation hearings on capitol hill and since the election.
He hasn t hesitated to tweet his way into some very sensitive territory of global diplomacy. Which can rattle unpredictable regimes like north korea or strike fear in global corporations. When trump tweets as president elect it s having an impact and nowhere can you see that more clearly than in stock prices for example when he sent out a negative tweet about lockheed martin automatically the stock started to fall meantime that same tweet mentioned boeing positively that stock went up. And he s not above an errant.
Tweet. Just yesterday. Tweeting at the wrong. Ivanka eliciting.
You re a man with great responsibilities may i suggest more care on twitter. And more time. Learning about climate change. The trump team didn t respond to our request for comment.
But tonight trump himself spoke out on fox what about twitter you re gonna continue to tweet yeah look i don t like tweeting. I have other things i could be doing there is a long history of presidential politics. Trying to bypass the press and communicate directly with the american people somebody like franklin d. Roosevelt who uses his fireside chats.
Quite effectively to get out a message a very specific targeted message to get around his critics. And that is why our social security program is an important part of ronald reagan talked to the public unfiltered every saturday. I would hesitate to put our case before the american people i want to press release. I just put it on twitter.
I think one of the things that his supporters liked is that he s just like them even though he s not mean that he tweets like them he talks like them. But she cautions as president he s not at all like them if we re having a president who is blocking all access and trying to discredit the press. We don t have people that are you know holding the president s feet to the fire being blocked by trump gained. Antonio del otero.
A bit of twitter fame this one. I had 52 thousand retweets you had 52 thousand retweets. But there have been a lot of haters. Too hopefully you ll go over the wall and never come back some really baseless stuff somebody tweeted hitler photo to you and put in a slur yeah.
This is all tweeted at you mm hmm. This is horrifying hate tweets from strangers morphed into hate tweets from classmates. They made a hate page. Where they produce tons of false stuff.
What kinds of insults were thrown in your direction. Things like terrorist to me they would call me a bunch of slurs and tell me that they re gonna throw me over the wall antonio s parents say they ve never faced this kind of bigotry before we discussed deleting his account. He s entitled to his voice mm hmm freedom of speech run away from things the twitter. Hate page against antonio was eventually taken down after school officials and the local police stepped in it stuff into your skin.
Though hasn t i strained relations. Are a constant menace to our peace and compel us to keep on a semiwar footing with a nation with which we are at peace. Thank you stan. This is obviously president william mckinley s war message to congress you can tell it s a war message.
Because it includes the word peace more than the word war by the way. It s commonly thought that the president mckinley. Asked congress for a declaration of war. He didn t he let congress take the lead that s the only time that s ever happened in all of american history.
Which would be more impressive. If we had declared war more than 5 times. So the document shows us that at least according to mckinley. We officially went to war for american peace of mind and to end economic uncertainty.
It was not to gain territory at least not in cuba. How do we know because congress also passed the teller amendment which forswore any us annexation of cuba perhaps because representatives of the us. Sugar industry like colorado s senator. Henry teller.
Feared competition from sugar produced in an american cuba. Or maybe not but probably so also not the cause of the war was the sinking of the uss maine. The battleship which had been in havana s harbor to protect american interests. Sank after an explosion on february 15.
Killing. 266 sailors. Now most historians chalk up the sinking to an internal explosion and not to spanish sabotage. But that didn t stop americans from blaming the spanish with their memorable meme.
Remember the maine to hell with spain. Let s go to the. Thoughtbubble the actual war was one of the most successful in us. History.
Especially if you measure success by brevity and relative paucity of deaths secretary of state. John hay called it a splendid little war and in many ways. It was fighting lasted about 4 months and fewer than 400 americans were killed in. Combat although 5000.
Died of wait for it disease stupid disease always ruining everything there weren t a ton of battles. But those that happened got an inordinate amount of press coverage like the july attack on san juan hill at the cuban city of santiago led by future president theodore roosevelt. While it was a successful battle. The real significance is that it furthered roosevelt s career.
He returned a hero promptly became governor of new york and by 1900 was mckinley s vice president. Which was a good job to have because mckinley would eventually be assassinated. A more important battle was that of manila bay. In which commodore.
George dewey. Destroyed. A tiny spanish fleet and took the philippines. This battle took place in may of 1898 well before the attack on cuba.
Which strongly suggests that a war that was supposedly about supporting cuban independence. Was really about something else. And what was that something else oh right a territorial empire as a result of the. War the us.
Got a bunch of new territories. Notably the philippines puerto rico and guam. We also used the war as an opportunity to annex hawaii to protect our ships that would be steaming toward the philippines. We didn t annex cuba.
But we didn t let it become completely independent either. The platt amendment in the cuban constitution authorized american military intervention whenever it saw fit and gave us a permanent lease for a naval base at guantanamo bay thanks thoughtbubble. So cuba and puerto rico were gateways to latin american markets. Puerto rico.
Was particularly useful as a naval station. Hawaii. Guam and especially the philippines opened up access to china american presence in china was bolstered by our contribution of about 3000. Troops to the multinational force that helped put down the boxer rebellion in 1900.
But in the philippines. Where americans had initially been welcome opinion. Soon changed after it became clear that americans were there to stay and exercise control emiliano aguinaldo leader of the filipino rebellion against spain quickly turned against the. Us because his real goal was independence and it appeared the us.
Would not provide it the resulting philippine. War lasted 4 years from. 1899 1903 and. 4200 americans were killed as well as over 100000.
The americans committed atrocities including putting filipinos in concentration camps. Torturing prisoners rape and executing civilians and much of this was racially motivated and news of these atrocities helped to spur anti imperialist sentiment. At home. With mark twain being one of the most outspoken critics.
Now there was some investment in modernization in the philippines in railroads schools and public health. But the interests of the local people were usually subordinated to those of the wealthy so american imperialism in short looked like most other. Imperialism so constitution nerds will remember that the us. Constitution has no provision for colonies.
Only territory that will eventually be incorporated as states congress attempted to deal with this issue by passing the foraker act in 1900. This law declared that puerto rico would be an insular territory its inhabitants would be citizens of puerto rico. Not the united states and there would be no path to statehood but this wasn t terribly constitutional congress did extend us. Citizenship to puerto ricans in 1917 now it s a commonwealth with its own government that has no voice in us.
Congress or presidential elections and no control over its own defense or environmental policy. The philippines were treated similarly to puerto rico. In a series of cases between 1901 and 1904 collectively called the insular cases. But hawaii was treated differently.
Because it had a sizeable population of american settlers who happened to be white ergo. It became a traditional territory with a path to statehood because white people and also pineapples now let s briefly talk about anti imperialism. There were lots of people who objected to imperialism on racial grounds arguing that it might lead to like diversity. But there were also non racist anti imperialists who argued that empire itself with its political domination of conquered people was incompatible with democracy which to be fair.
It is the democratic party. Which had supported intervention in cuba in 1900. Opposed the philippine war in its platform. Some progressives opposed imperialism too because they believed that america should focus on its domestic problems.
Yet those who supported imperialism were just as forceful among the most vocal was indiana. Senator albert beveridge. Who argued that imperialism was benevolent and would bring a new day of freedom. But make no mistake underneath it all imperialism was all about trade.
According to beveridge america s commerce must be with asia the pacific is our ocean where shall we turn for consumers of our surplus geography. Answers the question china is our natural customer in the end imperialism was really driven by economic necessity in 1902 brooks. Adams predicted in his. Book the new empire that the us.
Would soon outweigh any single empire. If not all empires combined within 20 years. America would be the world s leading economic power. We didn t have the most overseas territory.
But ultimately that didn t matter now the reasons for imperialism above all the quest for markets for american goods. Would persist long after imperialism became recognized as antithetical to freedom and democracy and we would continue to struggle to reconcile our imperialistic urges with our ideals about democracy untilnow thanks for watching i ll see you next week. In which John Green teaches you about Imperialism. In the late 19th century, the great powers of Europe were running around the world obtaining colonial possessions, especially in Africa and Asia. The United States, which as a young country was especially suceptible to peer pressure, followed along and snapped up some colonies of its own. The US saw that Spain s hold on its empire was weak, and like some kind of expansionist predator, it jumped into the Cuban War for Independence and turned it into the Spanish-Cuban-Phillipino-American War, which usually just gets called the Spanish-American War. John will tell you how America turned this war into colonial possessions like Puerto Rico, The Philippines, and almost even got to keep Cuba. The US was busy in the Pacific as well, wresting control of Hawaii from the Hawaiians. All this and more in a globe-trotting, oppressing episode of Crash Course US History.
